USA! USA! USA!

Let's go, America!

We started the month with fantastic fanfare for our nation's birthday, and we're ending it celebrating some of our greatest athletes as they compete for Olympic gold in Paris.  This July has been a patriotic one, indeed!

Next HOA Meeting: Tues August 20, 2024 from 6-7 PM in St. John Vianney Room E-9

It's been a rollercoaster of a month, that's for sure.  We kicked off things with an amazing neighborhood parade and 4th of July celebration but were quickly brought back to Houston reality with the damage brought on by Hurricane Beryl.  Hopefully, the excitement of the Olympics has picked up your spirits, even if we can't say the same for lingering storm debris.

I speak for the entire board when I say we sincerely appreciate the feedback you've provided regarding Trash Services.  We have been working diligently with Texas Pride to better communicate and set expectations, but we fully empathize with your frustrations.  If you wish to take matters into your own hands, the city has opened a few public dumpsters to which you can bring vegetative, construction, and demolition debris.  Find a complete list of allowed items and rules for patronage here.

Before we fully turn our attention to the new school year, make sure to enjoy a few more visits to the WPTC Pool.  The schedule changes to weekends only on August 12th through the end of the season on September 15th.  Shortly thereafter, we will begin working on the recently approved bathroom and office space renovations.  We can't wait to share the progress with you!

Speaking of back to school, you can find lots of information and don't-forget-to-bookmark links in the sections below.  For further details about bus routes, immunization requirements, and more, visit the SBISD Back-to-School center. Note, the new school year also brings revised school meal prices: beginning this fall, breakfast will be priced at $1.25, elementary school lunches at $2.50, and secondary school lunches at $2.75.

Now that I've gotten you fully stressed about the upcoming school year, remember that we still have another week+ of Olympic excitement.  So while the contents of our Patriotic Sandwich of a month were less than desirable (looking at you, Beryl), we hope the enthusiasm for extreme athleticism gives you just enough of a burst to get you through the last few weeks of a stormy summer.

I look forward to seeing you at our monthly HOA meetings, around the neighborhood on a walk, or at one of our many community events.  From the entire board, we wish you a safe and exciting end to your summer. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team with any feedback (good or not so good) or questions of any kind.

Here to serve you,

Sy Zaidi

WOC HOA Board President

TIME FOR A GLOW UP
The movement to renovate the existing Westchester Pool & Tennis Club bathroom and office facilities passed last month with 223 votes in favor, 30 opposed.  Instructions for paying the $523 assessment have been mailed; payment should be made through the Crest website by mid-September. Thanks again to our hard working Renovations Committee and all of those that helped shape the best decision for our community over the past few years.
'SCREAM FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ... school supplies!  Help support our sister school, Ridgecrest Elementary, by donating school supplies and gently used or new school lunchboxes and get a free handcrafted ice cream in return. The fun starts at 11 AM on August 3rd near the gazebo at Terry Hershey Park and is sponsored by Shelby Guerra and the H-Town Living team.

KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE

Summer may be coming to an end, but Hurricane Season is in full effect until November 30th.  Stay abreast of Atlantic storm developments on the NOAA website, and be sure to keep your Hurricane preparedness kit stocked and ready.  Follow our Facebook page for neighborhood discussions about storm-related events and recovery plans, as well.  Time and again, our community has come together to share information, resources, or just a cool spot to recharge and restore.

CHEERS TO SURVIVING SUMMER! Celebrate making it through another summer with a refreshing spirit after you drop your sprites off at school on the first day.  Head south from the NHE main entrance to the home of Alex & Dustin Brock to toast keeping your sanity (mostly) intact through the heat, storms, and chaos of entertaining your offspring on a schedule that doesn't come anywhere near close to aligning with the standard workday.  You've earned that donut, mimosa, or iced coffee, my friend.
MORE THAN COOKIES

From grades K-12, Girl Scouts all over the country are changing the world.  If your little one is interested in adventure, fun, friendship, and more, then Girl Scouts might be just the place! Use the code above to register your daughter for free this year, and be sure to indicate your ability to help volunteer.  Each troop needs two dedicated parents to stay organized.

GET YOUR PLANNERS READY

In case you need reminding, school is starting soon! Be sure to visit the NHE PTA website in August to renew your membership for the 2024-25 school year and sign up for the birthday marquee.  Mark your calendars now for Meet the Teacher from 430-600 PM on Monday, August 13th, and finish up any NHE Summer Reading Challenge logs before the first day of school on August 15th to earn the Top Reader award!

Mexican Bush Sage

Bloom Where You are Planted

Remove spent flowers and stalks and any dead foliage from agapanthus and other spring/summer flowering perennials. Trim or pinch back leggy annuals and perennials such as alyssum, begonias, impatiens, coleus, chrysanthemums, basil, and Mexican bush sage to help them bush out with more fullness.

Avoid fertilizing St. Augustine grass until early September to reduce outbreaks of the fungal disease “gray leaf spot” that causes diamond-shaped gray/brown lesions on the blades and runners. If present a labeled fungicide can be applied. Learn to “read” your plants symptoms of early drought. Some plants wilt, but some do not. On some plants the leaves may turn olive-drab or some other odd shade as a sign of their need for water. Grass blades may roll or fold. Water at the first signs of drought. Some plants may wilt in the noon sun without being dry, but wilting in the early morning or evening signals a need for water.

Keep plants mulched to help preserve moisture in the soil and moderate the rate of temperature changes in the soil in the summer heat as well as to help prevent weeds, improve the soil as the mulch breaks down, and makes the beds more attractive.

These tips are drawn from Lone Star Gardening by Neil Sperry and The River Oaks Garden Club’s A Garden Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast, 5th edition. The latter book advocates organic gardening practices but has a wealth of information specific to our area that is useful to all.
