Neighbors, what do you think of the new Newsletter?
We hope you are enjoying the updated website and newsletter format(s). We want to continue to serve our community with the information they need to know - all in one place - so please let us know what works and what needs work. Many thanks for your input!
Next HOA Meeting: Tues May 21, 2024 from 6-7 PM in St. John Vianney Room E-9
Hello neighbors,
I hope everyone is doing great as the kids' baseball and softball seasons wind down and we start racing into summertime! With the recent wild weather, please consider this a friendly reminder that Hurricane season will be here before you know it. Experts predict this year to be one of the more active seasons compared to the last 140 years; better to prepare early – just leave some toilet paper behind for the rest of us, please!
While you should stock up on water, batteries and non-perishables in case of power outage, remember we are a community of helpful neighbors ready to gas up grills and host picnics while we wait for relief, if needed. Let's hope we don't.
One thing we can absolutely count on is that it’ll be hot! We hope to see everyone enjoying the Westchester Pool & Tennis Club (WPTC) this summer to cool off, meet new neighbors, and keep the kids off the devices. The WPTC kicked off the new season on May 1st, so don't forget to register for continued access through next April. Early bird rates are available through the end of this month.
The Pool officially opens its gates for registered guests on May 18th, which is immediately followed by a fun-filled day of community camaraderie on May 19th. We'll start the day at the WPTC for the NHE Sprint Triathalon fundraiser and regroup later at the Mom's Club BBQ on the bayou later that afternoon. Read on for details of all the exciting community events coming up in the coming weeks.
There’s been a buzz of publicity around the Pool Facility Remodel Committee recommendations that should be in your mailboxes soon, if not already, and the upcoming neighborhood vote. Mark your calendars for the evening of May 13th for an open Q&A session with the committee and board members at the pool pavilion from 5-7 PM. If you’re unable to make it, you can always reach out to any committee or board member for assistance and answers.
Last and certainly not least, we’re ramping up our advertising approach in an effort to better-serve the residents and vendors that make up our community. Our advertising committee has connected with a number of local businesses, but we could always use help growing our reach. Please send an email to news@westchesterhouston.org with any contact information or recommendations you have for local vendors that may want a spot in our newsletter and website as we increase membership and growth of readers month over month! We have a variety of price points and options available starting at just $100 for listing on our Services Page. We also have assistance available for turnkey design services for those who need an extra hand with advertising.
I look forward to seeing you all at an upcoming HOA meeting, community event or just walking around our great neighborhood. From the entire board, we wish you all a great upcoming summer season, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team with any feedback (good or not so good) or questions of any kind.
Stay safe and we’re here to serve you,
Sy Zaidi
WOC HOA Board President

Bloom Where You are Planted
Cut off the flower stalks from bulbs after their blooms have faded. If they are perennial bulbs, leave the leaves until they begin to turn brown to replenish the bulbs for next year. This is the best month to plant new turf grass. Good choices for areas with plenty of sun are bermuda, St. Augustine, or zoysia. St. Augustine is the best choice for shade but it still requires at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
If your first application of lawn fertilizer was in March, apply a high-quality all-nitrogen or high- nitrogen fertilizer on your lawn for its second feeding of the year. If planting new shrubs and trees, take note of their mature sizes and how well they will fit in the area you want them to fill. Plan to water them by hand for the first summer since lawn irrigation is not sufficient by itself until their roots are established.
Plant warm-season annuals for color. For sun: moss rose, vinca, penta, angelonia, geranium, marigold, salvia, fan flower, hybrid purslane, cleome, etc. for flowers and purple fountain grass, sun-tolerant coleus, copper plant, ornamental sweet potato, etc. for foliage. For shade: waxleaf begonia, impatiens, nicotiana, etc. for flowers and caladiums and coleus, etc. for foliage. Apply liquid or granular all-nitrogen or high-nitrogen fertilizer as desired to blooming flowers, etc. following label instructions.
These tips are drawn from Lone Star Gardening by Neil Sperry and The River Oaks Garden Club’s A Garden Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast, 5th edition. The latter book advocates organic gardening practices but has a wealth of information specific to our area that is useful to all.
